BONIL (Xavier Bonilla)

(Quito, 1964) A Sociology graduate and graphic humourist whose work is published in El Universo and a variety of magazines. A member of the international associations Cartooning for Peace, and the Cartonclub - El Club de la Caricatura Latina. His cartoons denouncing corruption and abuse of power attracted the President of Ecuador’s anger, and as a result he has been prosecuted three times. On one of these occasions he was obliged to "rectify" a cartoon, and the newspaper was given a $90,000 fine. In February 2015, upon leaving a court case, he was greeted by admirers and defenders of freedom of expression, demonstrating in the street holding banners saying "Je Suis Bonil". He has won a range of awards including the Gran Premio SIP for Press Freedom and Liberty of Expression (2015); Special Prize for journalism and artistic work (SIP 2014); Honourable Mention in the Free Humour category at the World Press Cartoon event in Portugal, 2012; Mention for Excellence at the United Nations / Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Awards (2012); 1st Toros SÍ, toreros NO Prize (Mexico 2015).
