He took his Master’s in Mass Media at the London School of Economics and later worked at the newspapers El Mundo and El Colombiano in Medellin, Colombia, and the news agency Colprensa. In the early 1990s he became the first Colombian journalists to dedicate himself to the pursuit of human rights and peace. He won, as editor of the supplement Desplazados Humillados y Ofendidos, the Simón Bolívar award for investigation and the Harmodio Arias award for human rights, given by the Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa, both in 1996. As one of the BBC Mundo team, in 2006 he won the Ortega y Gasset Journalism Prize. Between 2012 and 2015 he was a bilingual correspondent for BBC Mundo and the BBC World Service in Mexico.
