(Amsterdam, 1942) Dutch essayist, sociologist and professor emeritus from the University of Amsterdam, where he has been professor of sociology since 1973. He has published a series of studies on subjects at the intersection of psychoanalysis and sociology and has received several awards for his work. He is regarded as the most prominent Dutch sociologist. His current research interests have gravitated towards the sociological study of transnational society, especially the prospects of transnational social policy and the emergent world language system. He has a lot of knowledge on the topic of memory, peace and reconciliation, which are very relevant for the discussions that are currently being held in Colombia regarding its peace process. He has written several successful books, such as In care of the State, Human Societies and Words of the World, which have been translated into ten languages.
