(Peru, 1933) Writer and former university lecturer. His work País de Jauja was chosen as the most important novel of the decade in a survey of writers and critics carried out by the Peruvian magazine Debate at the end of the 1990s. It was published in 1993 and was shortlisted for the Rómulo Gallegos Prize. Since then it has been republished several times, most recently in 2015. His bibliography also includes a book of short stories that deal with Andean themes, El unicornio, published in 1963 and re-published in 2007 by Santillana. As well as having been included in a number of anthologies, his work has won him awards in Peru and abroad, including the 2013 National Culture Prize and the 2004 Peruvian Medal of Honour for Culture.
