(Lima, Peru, 1953) A graduate in Sociology and Literature from the University of San Marcos, Eslava did postgraduate studies in Madrid and Lisbon. In 1980 he won first prize in the poetry category in the Javier Heraud Floral Games organized by the Peru Students’ Federation, as well as the El Poeta Joven del Perú Prize. He won these awards for the poetry books Ceremonial de muertes y linajes and De faunas y dioses, collected in the volume Poemas, published in 1981. In 1982 he won the Copé de Poesía Prize with Ítaca, his third poetry book, and in 1994 was shortlisted for the Casa de las Américas Prize in the children’s and young adult literature section. He was included on the IBBY List of Honour for the year 2000.
