(France, 1952) French doctor, diplomat and writer. He was the president of Action Against Hunger, one of the founders of Doctors Without Borders, and was also French Ambassador in Senegal and Gambia. He graduated as a doctor from the Hospital de la Salpêtrière and studied at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris. He led a number of humanitarian missions to Africa and Latin America. He is the author of several books on geopolitics and human rights, as well as novels which have won a range of awards, including the Goncourt Novel Prize and the Méditerranée award. In 2018 he published the novel Le suspendu de Conakry.
