RCN Short Story Competition
National Short Story Competition
The RCN and Ministry of Education National Short Story Competition is an initiative to encourage learning and the promotion of creative writing and reading to students and teachers in Colombia.
During the four years that the competition has been running, this teaching project has received more than 190 thousand stories written by students from the first year of school up to university level, and from teachers and heads of subjects in state and private institutions across all regions of the country. This initiative has used tools such as online forums, blogs, teacher networks, news feeds and the publication in anthologies of the winning stories.
In addition to the competition, workshops on how to realise a piece of creative writing are held, in which teachers from all areas of the country receive visits from well-known writers and leaders of literary workshops, who share with them their knowledge of textual genres, practical tips on reading and pedagogical strategies to promote creative writing in the classroom. From the beginning, Hay Festival has supported this initiative, championing it to international writers and asking them to participate in judging the competition. The Festival has also hosted the announcements of the winning stories and the awarding of the prizes.
