Hay Festival and the ‘Fundación MAPFRE’
(‘MAPFRE Foundation’) are staging two special workshops with
Andrew Ruhemann and his team
. The famous animation producer and creator behind the Gorillaz characters will be giving a workshop aimed at children.
‘Hay Festivalito’
(Hay Festival for kids), the activity programme aimed at children and teenagers as part of the Hay Festival, has adopted Plan as its social cause – an organisation promoting young people’s involvement in publishing projects. Some of the writers will be coming together with groups of adolescents running communication projects in their communities and be giving workshops. Activities will be organised at Casa Mapfre and the Biblioteca Bartolomé Calvo Library.
Cerrejón in association with the HAY FESTIVAL
will be presenting a culture and literature show in Guajira as part of its commitment to social and cultural development.
British Council Colombia
will be putting on workshops and activities relating to creative writing, literature and English teaching with some of the British guest writers at the Hay Festival. These workshops will be aimed at students and members of the public involved in English teaching and learning..
‘Concurso Nacional de Cuento’ (‘National Short Story Competition’)
organised by RCN – Ministry of National Education. The 30 finalists will be attending the 2008 Hay Festival with their work being published. The First National Short Story Competition is a homage to Nobel Prize Winning Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez with the jury comprising world-class members such as Spanish writer Ana María Moix, Cuban writer Wendy Guerra, Colombian journalist Juan Gossaín and Colombian writer Jorge Franco. In addition, it is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Renata, Ascun and the Caro y Cuervo Institute.
The CERLALC Book Exchange in association with the HAY FESTIVAL.
This event will be held in Plaza de la Proclamación in Cartegena on January 26th 2008. Participants will be able to exchange their own books with available copies and those of other participants.
Homage to Kapuscinski.
The Fundación Nuevo Periodismo (New Journalism Foundation — FNPI) and the Hay Festival of Literature have come together to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of journalist and writer Ryszard Kapuscinski. This event will be held on January 23rd within the framework of the Hay Festival of Literature and comprise an afternoon of talks split over 3 panels, given over to the memory of Ryszard Kapuscinki and his contribution to fomenting literary journalism. The journalists Jon Lee Anderson, Alma Guillermoprieto, Juanita and the Spanish editor for Kaupscinki and founder of the Publishing House Editorial Anagrama Jorge Herralde will be taking part. The session will look at and celebrate the relationship between literature and journalism. One of the main reflections will centre on the role of journalism as a key tool in the generation of more open multicultural societies.
The BAT (British American Tobacco) Foundation Colombia
will be presenting various activities within the framework of the 2008 HAY festival. The opening of the touring exhibition the 2nd ‘Salón BAT de arte popular’ (‘BAT Popular Art Show’) will be held on Wednesday 23rd January at the ‘Centro de la Cooperación Española’ (‘Centre for Spanish Cooperation’) – ‘Claustro de Santo Domingo’ (‘ Cloister of Santo Domingo’) at 8:30 pm; the event will be enlivened by Rey Vallenato 2006 – 2007, Beto Jamaica and group. The 2008 HAY FESTIVAL Prizes will be awarded on Sunday 27th January at 7:30 pm in the Teatro Heredia (Heridia Theatre). The BAT Foundation Colombia will be presenting a concert with Totó la Momposina – one of Colombia’s most famous performers.

The Summer School at the Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar (Bolívar University of Technology), Cartegena, invites you to a preparatory workshop to get to know who the guest writers are beforehand, what is their specialist literary genre, aspects to their personality and literary style, as well as their reputation. Reading texts by these authors, led by experts and with perceptive and conversational comments, will help you to get yourself prepared to enjoy taking part in the Hay Festival even more.
