In 2006 we started the Greenprint Project, and for ten years, Hay Festival has been engaged in a programme of managing and mitigating its environmental impact through Hay on Earth.

Since 2006 we have focused on three key areas:

  • our own direct impacts
  • the impacts of our audience
  • programming of events that will stimulate debate and discussion about key issues in the sustainable development and environmental agenda.

Over the last 29 years, the Festival audience has grown from 1,000 people in Hay to 250,000 visitors on five continents each year. We are aware of the impact we have on the environment.

Hay Festival is continuing to develop the ideas and practices we've been working on in the field of sustainability and we want to collaborate and work as widely as possible to share best practice. This website is dedicated to furthering those aims.

We are actively looking for organisations, public bodies and individuals who can help us achieve our objectives. If you would like to find out more, please contact andy@hayfestival.org

Sustainable Hay Festival

A guide to sustainability

The Hay on Earth Toolkit is in essence a guide to all of the changes we have been undertaking to make Hay Festival more sustainable; however, as part of this process we wanted to be able to share with other Festival organisers all the things we have tried and tested. All festivals have common elements so while not all the suggestions may be individually appropriate, there will hopefully be useful information for all.

The Hay on Earth Toolkit is not designed to be a static document – as we discover new ideas and solutions, we will post and highlight these. Similarly, this is not designed to be just Hay Festival’s experience – if your festival has tried and tested ways of improving sustainability, please let us know and we’ll add them in.
