John Etheridge's Sweet Chorus
Friday 7 August 2009, 7.30pm-9pm, Cathedral
Now celebrating its tenth year together, John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus was originally formed as John's tribute to his mentor and inspiration Stephane Grappelli, with whom he worked for five years in the 70s and early 80s. Taking its cue from the Hot Club of France – the legendary group that featured Grappelli and Django Reinhardt – the band features John’s dazzling guitar work and the scintillating violin of Chris Garrick. The relationship of these two has been described as one of the most potent in European jazz, and backed up by the propulsive drive of Kelbie and Crowdy the band produces breathtaking sallies through repertoire both classic and contemporary. A must for all fans of melodically-based inspired, swinging acoustic jazz.

We’re thrilled to launch the 50th birthday album of new jazz songs by the singer and songwriter.

'Leave your preconceptions at home,' begins one London critic’s assessment of sensual singer-songwriter Sarah Jane Morris, who straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goosebump-raising four octave range that rumbles from the heels of her size eight shoes to the tips of her flame-red mane. This event has taken place

Griots to Garage
The rising superstar trombonist introduces his show ‘Griots to Garage: A Musical History of the African Diaspora’. He takes the audience through an historical musical journey, inspired by the African Diaspora, starting with the long-established traditional cultures of sixteenth century West Africa. 'Griots to Garage' documents the path of peoples and time through music of African origin: the horrors of transportation and slavery; field-work songs; the developments of the blues and jazz; and onwards through samba, soul and reggae, to the funky, urban hip-hop and garage grooves of today. The music is perfectly complemented by the artistry of Vijay artist Nick Hillel of Yeast Multimedia, whose mixing of imagery with live performance intensifies the emotional impact of this powerful story of tragedy and transcendence.

Courtney Pine
Saturday 8 August 2009, 7.30pm-9pm, Market Hall
Transition in Tradition
The great Brecon favourite, made a CBE this year, returns with his new project.
'Pine serves up a creole gumbo of Caribbean, Latin and African flavours with the nuanced power to restore the most jaded jazz palate… the Jazz Warrior succeeds in broadening our minds as well as our ears.' BBC Music Magazine
Featured on the recording are guitarist Cameron Pierre, pianist Alex Wilson, electric violinist Omar Puente, double bassist Darren Taylor, and drummer Robert Fordjour, alongside American vibraphonist/Marimba player Stefon Harris, all of whom have succeeded in creating music that is as deep as the legacy of jazz, and as encompassing as the journey from Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Europe can be – in other words, this is the soundtrack to their cultural journey.
A change in instrumentation sees Pine's bass clarinet take centre stage on many occasions, alongside harmonium, castanets and mandolin, and the resulting sound is like no other Courtney Pine record. 'Of course I pay respect to the great Bechet by playing a silver soprano saxophone like his, but there are other flavours like my alto flute playing on The Tale Of Joe Harriott and of course that Caribbean groove.'
It's that very groove that gives this album another of its unique elements, as forays into New Orleans second line beats merge into an old school swing beat, a medium tempo swing smoothly flows into a reggae one drop beat; there is a feeling of continuing movement as each track passes from one place to another. 'I want to show in these compositions how our journey as a culture is constantly in transition, things change in one tune musically just as we do in real life. You can hear this movement especially in Creole Swing or the blazing opener Haiti.'
When asked about the South African tinged tracks ('Afropean' and 'Au Revoir'), that close the album, Pine explains, 'Having worked in the 80s with many of the exiles from apartheid South Africa, these pieces fitted the project perfectly as it was the changes in 1994, when all-inclusive elections occurred for the first time in South Africa, that inspired me to believe in the notion that this world could be a better place to live in.'
Embracing change and unity, allowing for the transition of tradition.Sponsored by Gate Gallery & Glassworks This event has taken place

Anouar Brahem – oud , François Couturier – piano , Jean Louis Matinier – accordion.
Transporting and spectacularly beautiful concert from the great Oud’s conjurer round midnight.
This age-old traditional Oriental lute carries in its calabash all the musical heritage of the Arab and Islamic worlds. Brahem is a phenomenon, a concentrated mix of prolific paradoxes: a supremely subversive classicist; a solitary soloist resolutely open to the world; a culture smuggler ever inclined to adventure beyond his own limits, pushing back musical frontiers without ceding an inch of the aesthetical standards forged across time and tempered in a profound respect for tradition.
From the rich repertory of Jazz (John Surman, Dave Holland and Jan Garbarek are just some of the leading players to succumb to his melodic spells), to the multifarious traditions of Mediterranean and Oriental influence (from his native Tunisia to the confines of India and Iran), his sensitive yet rigorous music ceaselessly redefines a composite universe of poetry and culture, balancing discretion and sensuality, nostalgia and contemplation. This event has taken place

Derek Nash – sax, Winston Blissett – bass, Arden Hart – keys, Tim Cansfield – guitar, Darby Todd – drums.
The guys bring an aggressive brand of jazz/funk along the lines of George Duke, The Yellowjackets and The Breckers. The saying goes: if you want to bake a great cake you need to get the ingredients just right. Take 3 heaped spoonfuls of Derek Nash, leading arranger for Jools Holland's R&B Orchestra and frontline sax man to the same. Add an egg while gradually sifting in the soulful bass lines of Winston Blissett, Massive Attack. This cake will not be short of "Heart" if it's gonna rise and this recipe calls for the talented Arden Hart on keys and trumpet and the celebrated guitar of Tim Cansfield, whose credits include such dessert delights as Annie Lennox, Ray Charles and most recently Steve Winwood. The icing, you ask? Who needs it! We will just stick Darby Todd (currently touring with Justin Hawkins and Hot Leg) plus Darby's entire 150 piece drum and cymbal set up smack on top of this cake. Abdullah Ibrahim Trio
Sunday 9 August 2009, 2.30pm-4pm, Market Hall
Abdullah Ibrahim – piano, Belden Bullock – bass, George Gray – drums.
The pianist is joined by his long-term collaborators for a concert that explores his musical heritage and range from Arabic and Moorish roots, township jazz, his work with Ellington and Monk, and the great canon of classical piano virtuosity.
South African pianist Adolph Johannes 'Dollar' Brand was born in Cape Town in 1934. After his conversion to Islam in 1968, he changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim. He was only 15 years old when he set out on his career as a professional pianist. In 1959 he performed with the group Jazz Epistles on Jazz in Africa, the first jazz album recorded in South Africa. In 1962 he left his homeland and ultimately took up residence in New York. The magic of Ibrahim lies in his capacity to blend the rhythms and colours of South Africa with jazz improvisation. In 1964, Duke Ellington was so impressed by one of the South African's live concerts that he immediately arranged for a recording that resulted in the album Duke Ellington Presents The Dollar Brand Trio. Ibrahim's compositions have been arranged for large orchestras and he has written film scores including that for Lasse Hallström's Chocolat. However, it is when playing with a trio that his true musical identity is best expressed. This event has taken place

The Brazilian superstar makes a return appearance to Brecon with her jazz band Sirius B. She is presently promoting her new album Out There on 33 records. This departure from the sounds of Brazil showcases her unique combination of commanding vocals and modern jazz violin and features guest appearances from some of the cream of British jazz, including Jason Rebello and Iain Ballamy.
Sirius B are one of the UK's most respected Brazilian jazz acts. Since they formed in the spring of 1998 they have released six highly acclaimed albums. Their most recent release The Essential Sirius B (Freestyle Records) has received rave reviews worldwide and has been playlisted by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mike Chadwick, Snowboy and, in Japan, Sunaga T.
The band have captivated audiences all over Europe and were a big hit at the Montreux Jazz Festival. They have opened at the Barbican Centre for Caetano Veloso and Aierto Moreira, and jammed with Carlinhos Brown and Jair Rodrigues.
Snowboy called them the 'perfect jazz dance band' – jazz you can dance to, which sums up their music which unashamedly crosses boundaries between jazz, samba, world dance and hard-hitting bossa nova. Catch one of their rare live appearances this year and enjoy the chance to hear some authentic reworkings of the classics of bossa nova, great original tunes, or just dance the afternoon away in true carnival spirit. This event has taken place

Manu Dibango & The Soul Makossa Gang
Sunday 9 August 2009, 7.30pm-9pm, Market Hall
The Lion of Cameroon is a lover of everything from funk, hip-hop and cabaret to chanson, gospel and reggae; from Latin, Caribbean and West African rhythms to Congolese sounds and his very own Cameroonian derivative, Makossa Soul. At 73 Dibango is still wielding his colour co-ordinated set of saxophones, still rippling his hands over the length of a marimba/xylophone, still improvising melodic lines from behind his circular black specs. Above all else, he is a jazzman.
