Hay Festival Segovia 2014

25–28 SEPTEMBER 2014

The ninth edition of Hay Festival Segovia took place this weekend, 25–28 September – four intense days of conversation and debate, film screenings, concerts and exhibitions. Highlights included Nobel Laureates Mario Vargas Llosa and JMG Le Clézio, as well as Javier Marías, Clara Sánchez, Laura Bates, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Cees Nooteboom and Pierre Lemaitre, among many others.

Hay Festival Xalapa 2014

2–5 OCTOBER 2014

Hay Festival Xalapa 2014 in Mexico offers more than 70 events, with writers such as Salman Rushdie, Joumana Haddad, Margo Glantz and Sergio González Rodríguez. The diverse and inspiring programme also includes film-maker Rithy Panh, Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez, popular scientists Alan Weisman and Paul Bogard, and artist Abraham Cruzvillegas, among many others.

Festival-goers can also enjoy Hay Festivalito, the programme for children and families, as well as exhibitions by photographer Kim Manresa, graphic novel artist Killoffer, and a group of emerging artists from Xalapa itself, and concerts by the Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, Daniel Johnston and Concha Buika.

Africa39 Project

Africa39 is a project created by Hay Festival and Port Harcourt UNESCO World Book Capital 2014, which aims to select and celebrate 39 of the best African south of the Sahara and dispora writers under the age of 40.

An anthology of pieces by the 39 writers, published in English by Bloomsbury, will be launched on 12 October at the Southbank Centre. Africa39 writers taking part include Clifton Gachagua (Kenya), Nadifa Mohamed (Somalia) and Stanley Kenani (Malawi), the anthology's editor Ellah Alfrey, and the researcher of the longlist Binyavanga Wainaina, founder of the Nairobi-based literary magazine Kwani?

Hay gathers people together to think about the world as it is and to imagine how it might be. It's a big conversation about discovery and intellectual adventure. We share stories and ideas with great international writers and thinkers, film-makers, historians and novelists, philosophers, environmentalists, poets and scientists. And at night we like to party with the greatest comedians and musicians. It's a bunch of mates hanging out in a field with time to think, finding the inspiration to re-imagine the world. Hay is, in Bill Clinton's phrase, 'the Woodstock of the mind'.

The festival is in its 27th year in Hay, a magical book town in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park. We also create festivals in cities around the world every year from Cartagena to Dhaka, and from Beirut to Nairobi.
