Pupils put pen to paper
Last week saw the publication of The Scribblers, a new magazine, written and designed by school children in the Hay area.
With a grant funded by Powys County Council, the students have enjoyed and benefited from sessions with local writers, illustrators and designers to learn how to improve their creative writing, to conduct interviews and much more.
Writers Jenny Valentine (winner of the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize 2008 for Finding Violet Park), Judith Wills (nutrition and diet expert who has sold more than two million books) and Julie Harries (former Hereford Times journalist) have all spent time with the students, as have illustrator Rachel Best and designer Paul Thomas, of BWA Design.
The first issue of The Scribblers includes an exclusive interview with TV and radio comedian Marcus Brigstocke, short stories, book reviews, a top 10 tips page and more.
The first edition of The Scribblers will be distributed free of charge to schools in the local area and is available at the Hay Festival box office. Call 01497 822 620.
