Clean: a story of Addiction and Identity
Clean treads through contemporary issues, such as drug addiction, gender identity, and mental health. Dawson said, “Clean is not an easy book,” Lexi, the protagonist, embodies the rich and privileged teen who goes down the rabbit hole of drug abuse and eventually wakes up in the back of her brother’s car, being driven to rehabilitation.
The story develops around Lexi’s complexities and according to Dawson, the character challenges the reader to look beyond her obvious problem.
“None of you could hate Lexi, more than Lexi hates Lexi,” she said, while implying that most often the self-loathing of an addict is not that obvious. She also added how addicts use social media as a façade to shield the world from their day to day complexities.
