(Nicaragua, 1942) He founded Ventana magazine in 1960 and led the literary movement of the same name. In 1968 he founded the Editorial Universitaria Centroamericana (EDUCA) imprint and in 1981 the Editorial Nueva Nicaragua. His bibliography includes more than fifty books. With Margarita, está linda la mar (1998) he won the Alfaguara International Novel Prize, given by a jury chaired by Carlos Fuentes, and the 2000 José María Arguedas Latin American Novel Prize, awarded by the Casa de las Américas. His literary career has been recognized with the José Donoso Iberoamerican Literature Prize, in 2011, and the Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in Spanish, in 2014. His novel Sara was published by Alfaguara in 2015. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, been made a Commander of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, given the German Order of Merit and the Spanish Orden Isabel la Católica. His last book is Tongolele no sabía bailar (2021).
