Sven Beckert lectures in American History at Harvard University. His latest book, Empire of Cotton is a study of the formation of modern capitalism through the history of cotton. Beckert has received the Guggenheim Fellowship in the Humanities and was shortlisted for the 2015 Pulitzer History Prize.
