The Future of Education

Elisa Guerra (Mexico), educator and researcher, talks to Juan Manuel Restrepo about the urgent issue of education in the world and how to establish new systems that guarantee quality, free and universal education. Guerra holds a Master's degree in Education from Harvard University and in 2015 was named Best Educator in Latin America and the Caribbean by the Inter-American Development Bank; she was also a finalist for the Global Teacher Prize - considered the Nobel Prize for teaching - in 2015 and 2016. A member of the International Commission on the Futures of Education (UNESCO), she is co-author of the report Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education. In 2017, Al Jazeera television made a documentary about it, recognising its proposal as one of the six most important educational innovations worldwide.

With educator and writer Elisa Guerra (Mexico), environmental activist and feminist Yayo Herrero (Spain) and social leader and activist Paula Marcela Moreno (Colombia), in conversation with Hay Festival Director Cristina Fuentes La Roche.

Seven lessons

 Escenario Digital Hay Querétaro

The great French thinker Edgar Morin, celebrates 100 years of life in 2021. His ideas about the so-called Complex Thought are more relevant than ever before. The writer of Seven Complex Lessons in Education for the Future and his most contemporary vision in Cambiemos de vía, lecciones de la pandemia will be part of this conversation about complexity in even more complex times. Juan Villoro, Mexican fiction writer, essayist, dramatist and journalist, winner of the Herralde Prize for his novel El testigo, and one of the most interesting voices in the Spanish-language literary panorama. He will talk to the French-Colombian philosopher Nelson Vallejo-Gómez, author of an essay about the construction of knowledge and the metamorphosis of disciplines in the work of Morin, about the importance of those seven lessons, with particular emphasis on the transformations and changes of paradigm that the global pandemic is bringing.

Meritocracy and elitism

Santiago Iñiguez, Executive President of IE University and an international expert in education, brings together a group of experts to debate the meaning of meritocracy and its implications in education and other spheres of social life. The researcher into subjects related to international terrorism and member of the Assembly of Madrid, Hana Jalloul; the former politician Celia Villalobos, who was Minister of Health and Consumer Affairs, Mayor of Malaga and Vice President of the Spanish Congress of deputies; the author of The Aristocracy of Talent: How Meritocracy Made it to the Modern World and international journalist, Adrian Wooldridge; and the Financial Times columnist Simon Kuper, author of Chums: How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK reflect with Iñiguez on the impact of this phenomenon in history and in the future of our societies.

Once the event has finished, the authors will sign books in the booth outside IE University.

Marta Williams, journalist and expert in leadership and coaching, is considered 'the mother of coaching in Spain'. A much sought-after participant in conferences on the subject, she works as a teacher in advanced training programmes for executives who want to be better leaders. Beatriz Celaya directs the publishing house Alt autores. She became involved in the publishing world on the wave of the digital revolution. In her publishing work, she tries to adapt to all formats and new forms of cultural consumption. She organises the Jornadas del Autor for the Basque Writers' Association, of which she is vice-president. Sara Ayats is Cloud provider manager of VN Ware in Spain and Portugal, and president of Aseabel, the association of Former Students of Belgium Universities and Friends of Belgium.

They will be in conversation with Luis Besa, journalist and philosophy professor.
