A publicist's view

Eight days in and one to go this ‘working holiday’ is really ramping up!  Less holiday, more work.

As a book publicist I sometimes find it tricky to separate work from life.  My job is really to do a lot of talking to lots of people and try and link them up.  I am not sure it would make sense to try and separate things.  I love meeting people and there is no better place to start a conversation than Hay.

The mix of authors, agents, journalists, artists, and people like me, is unique.  The web that is weaved over coffee, tea, and wine is complicated – it interconnects not only on many levels but in so many ways.  From physics to palliative care, archaeology to evolution these are just some of the topics covered in a matter of hours.

The sanctuary that is the green room is the place with the buzz, the hive of activity.

Cooked up round the kitchen table and dished out from a field in Wales.  Nowhere else could I do what I do best and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.  Over 20 years on this is my home from home, my break from the office, my business breakfast, my working lunch and my networking dinner.

As I type I catch the end of a conversation ‘you get everything at Hay’ that says it all really!
