A special story time with prize-winning children’s author Rachel Bright. Includes The Koala Who Could, her empowering tale of a koala called Kevin who learns that change can bring new and wonderful things, which was the 2017 winner of Oscar’s Book Prize. The best under-fives' book award is supported by Amazon and the National Literacy Trust.

Building with Books

Venue: Mess Tent
Create constructions using old books as your building blocks. Hay Castle Trust explores buildings, architecture, engineering and recycling using books from the Castle Honesty Bookshop. Try out different structures and designs such as a book igloo, paperback snake and a fiction den. Real work will begin on the restoration of Hay Castle this year — using stone, wood and steel.

You don't need to roar to be heard...Join author and illustrator Ed Vere for a fantastic storytelling event celebrating daydreamers, quiet courage and the importance of being true to yourself. Ed will be live drawing characters from his new book and introducing children to the charms of Leonard the Lion and his best friend Marianne, who just happens to be a duck.

In this interactive creative session you'll put into practice techniques used by the greatest storytellers of all time, and develop the skills you need to keep your friends entertained. Plus, who knows? You might even find a bestseller up your sleeve. Jen Lunn works with Read for Good to bring the magic of storytelling to children in hospital and to develop bespoke story workshops for schools. She has collected more than 100 stories told by children to create performances, podcasts and digital books.

Hereford College of Arts Puppet Show

Performing Arts degree students from Hereford College of Arts have interpreted a Persian story written by Samad Behrangi, in collaboration with The Fetch Theatre Company, using puppets created especially by Contemporary Design Craft students to create this show about freedom, self-determination, courage and power. It’s about a little fish who dares to swim against the tide. On his way he has many adventures and meets all sorts of creatures that are both wonderful and dangerous.
