Digital Animation and Video Mapping workshop with MASH Cinema

Venue: Scribblers Hut

Create the wildest creature you can imagine and make it come to life and run loose over the Hay Festival site in this exciting digital animation and projection workshop. You will design your own 2D digital creature on an iPad and animate it, then you’ll learn about video mapping and projection and have a chance to see your creations projected 30ft high. In the evening MASH Cinema will be in guerrilla mode, projecting your monsters all over the Festival site, and we'll make a film of the projections that will be available to watch later.

Join Alison Eves (Royal Institution) and Charlie Gilderdale (NRICH Cambridge) who will share some of their favourite mathematical problems. This will be a highly interactive session so be prepared to explore, explain and generalise, and discover that everyone can enjoy thinking mathematically. Problems will be selected from the popular RI Masterclass and NRICH collections.

Poetry workshops

How do we write poetry about the familiar? The subject may be your back garden, your local coffee shop or your country of origin. In this poetry masterclass, participants will look at ways in which they can gather important information to build a narrative around place. They will learn how to distil vital aspects and convert subjective ideas into poems. All abilities welcome.

Building with Books

Venue: Mess Tent
Create constructions using old books as your building blocks. Hay Castle Trust explores buildings, architecture, engineering and recycling using books from the Castle Honesty Bookshop. Try out different structures and designs such as a book igloo, paperback snake and a fiction den. Real work will begin on the restoration of Hay Castle this year — using stone, wood and steel.

Hip hop/rap workshops

Venue: Cube

Keep it real with literary activist, pioneering participatory artist, rapper and hip hop educator Rufus Mufasa in this writing and spoken word workshop. Rufus has an infectious enthusiasm that inspires everyone she works with, whether it's prisoners and young offenders in Parc prison or young adults at Hay. Her new album Fur Coats From the Lion's Den was chosen as Wales Arts Review's album of the year.

Ethio-Contemporary and African Dance Workshop

Venue: Hay Primary School Hall

The Destino Dance Company, who have performed at Sadlers Wells, aim to promote Ethiopian traditional dance and culture by merging it with contemporary and West African dance. This unique blend allows us to share the richness of African dance and culture. These sessions are recommended for anyone who loves dancing regardless of age, gender or ability.

Build an Air Powered Rocket Car Workshop

Venue: Mess Tent
In this workshop young people will have an opportunity to demonstrate their engineering skills by completing the challenge in teams to design, build and test their own air powered rocket cars. With limits of time and resource they will demonstrate their practical skills in a time-trial challenge.

A Poem for Every Day of the Year

Venue: Llwyfan Cymru – Wales Stage

The poetry curator's latest anthology is a journey through a calendar year, highlighting key moments and dates with a poem for every day, by writers including Wordsworth, Lewis Carroll, Maya Angelou and Emily Dickinson. Join Allie and a host of actors including Tobias Menzies (The History BoysGame of Thrones, starring as Prince Philip in The Crown season three and four), Ophelia Lovibond, Tony Robinson, Toby Jones and Gina Bellman (star of Coupling, currently streaming to a new generation of fans on Netflix, and Ophelia in Peter Hall’s Hamlet opposite Stephen Dillane) in a highly entertaining hour as they perform their favourite poems from the book, a humorous journey through history and human experience.
