Launch of Hay Festival Segovia 2018

Tour of eleven visual arts exhibitions

– Venue: La Alhóndiga

Hay Festival Segovia 2018 kicks off with a tour of eleven visual art exhibitions commissioned for the festival.

Meeting at the Puerta de San Martín, with an introduction to a project on memory recovery through the sculpture of Garaizabal, the tour continues to La Alhóndiga and the first exhibition. Sisyphus Confused is a photo reportage that details the daily activity and creative process of artist Francisco Leiro.

Next, La Casa de la Lectura opens its doors to reveal Dibugrafías, 51 watercolours by Miguel Panadero on which José Felix Valdivieso has written a story.

The tour continues at the Palacio Quintanar, which on the ground floor hosts Enchanted (Encantados), by Brazilian photojournalist Ricardo Teles. Teles has taken portraits of a variety of cultural and religious celebrations throughout Brazil, capturing links to the country's roots: a mix of festivity, pain and memory of slavery, an intangible imprint in the collective memory of the nation. The exhibition has been organised in conjunction with the Brazilian Embassy.

The first floor of the palace hosts four exhibitions from the Europe and Coexistence project, co-organised by EUNIC:

  • Spoken Word, a movement in the United Kingdom which, over the last decade, has been a very active platform for debating the issues that concern British society. Organised with the British Council.
  • Harald Hauswald, Alltag (Daily life) brings together photographs that provide a silent, discreet and objective gaze, revealing the photographer’s affinity for the simple life of the working class and children: an ironic, sarcastic and very critical vision of the all-powerful GDR. Organised with the Goethe-Institut.
  • Gypsy, a photography exhibition by Tomasz Tomaszewski that illustrates the daily life of the Romani minority in eleven different countries and makes a plea for tolerance towards those whose lifestyle, religion and ritual differ from the mainstream. Organised with the Polish Institute for Culture.
  • August ‘68, on the 50th anniversary of the Prague Spring and the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact countries. This photography exhibition by several contributors is a reminder of how, during that year, the Czech Communist Party had lost control of the moderated political reform process that had been started in answer to the need for societal freedom. Organised with the Czech Cultural Centre.

The tour carries on to the Colegio de Arquitectos de Segovia, launching the exhibition Architecture for people (Arquitectura para las personas), which shows a series of projects developed by Danish architects, including the celebrated Dorte Mandrup, who have focused their designs on environmental, economic and social sustainability.

The tour continues at the Torreón de Lozoya, with the exhibition Triptych (Tríptico) by Eduardo Arroyo, one of the best-known Spanish artists around the world, who will himself attend this launch event. The exhibition offers insight into his work in three fundamental areas: art, literature and the stage. Organised with AC/E (Acción Cultural Española) and Fundación Caja Segovia.

The tour finishes at Real Casa de la Moneda with an installation by Kate Daudy, a British artist whose The Tent is part of a larger artistic project reflecting on ideas of home and identity, entitled Am I My Brother's Keeper?

– Venue: La Cárcel Cinemateca

Gonzalo is a farmer and lives with his family in a small town in the Ribera del Duero, in the north of Castilla. The old and wise tradition of producing the food you eat, from the “matanza” of the pig to your own wine, has been very good in these times of crisis that are experienced in Spain where the closure of factories, unemployment and harsh impositions of the food industry forces small towns to fight to survive. Since ancient times its annual cycle is marked by sowing and harvesting as well as parties and customs and there are always difficulties and problems, but also joy and satisfaction. Since the world is the world, it is a portrait of lesser-known Spain and is also understood as a tribute to simple things, naturalness and the refreshing rebellion of vital wisdom.

Director: Günter Schwaiger. 2016. Duration 103 min.
