The Open University in Wales

The Open University in Wales is the leading provider of part-time undergraduate higher education and supported distance learning across Wales. There are over 14,500 OU students in Wales and almost three quarters of OU students are in work while they study. The OU operates an open entry policy and many OU in Wales undergraduate students join without standard higher education entry level qualifications. Forty-five per cent of OU in Wales students come from Wales’ most disadvantaged areas.

The OU is a world leader in developing technology to increase access to education on a global scale. This includes free study units on OpenLearn which has had more than 40 million visits; materials on iTunes U which have recorded more than 70 million downloads; and the OU YouTube channel which has had over 30 million views since it was launched in 2008. The OU in Wales’ bilingual platform Open Learn Wales and OpenLearn Cymru offers free Welsh and English medium learning resources to encourage access to higher education in both languages.
