BEBRAS Workshop

Venue: Scribblers Hut

The UK BEBRAS Computational Thinking Challenge is designed to engage students in tasks that are fun and based on problems that computer scientists often meet and enjoy solving. They can be solved without prior knowledge but do require logical thinking. At Hay you can meet the BEBRAS team and see how well you do. Please bring your own laptop if you can.

Linde Wester

The Solace of Quantum

Venue: Oxfam Moot

What is the multiverse theory? What is Entanglement? Superposition? What is quantum computing, and how does it help? You don’t have to be a quantum physicist to understand these things if you have one who can explain them to you.  And we have Linde Wester.

Leave your mark and help re-animate a classic short film. Join Dan Brown and Nick Brown from MASH Cinema and Hereford College of Arts to create and collage your own frames, and see the new film take shape over the weekend. Completed animation will be available on the Hay Festival website.

Get seriously messy with Jon Williams from Herefordshire’s Eastnor Pottery. You will see pottery demonstrations and  create your own sculptural masterpieces to add to our forest critter’s colony or take home...or both. One thing's for sure... mud will fly!

Meg Rosoff

Beck

Venue: Starlight Stage

The final novel from Carnegie Medal-winning author Mal Peet is a sweeping coming-of-age adventure of a mixed-race boy transported to North America in the 1900s. Mal sadly passed away in 2015, leaving Meg Rosoff to complete the story. In conversation with Daniel Hahn she discusses the process of working with Mal’s idea, writing it in her own way, and about the reception to the book.

Screenprinting with Sunny Todd Prints

Venue: Scribblers Hut

Learn how to silk-screen print with locally based and internationally acclaimed textile designers Sunny and Emma Todd. Their bold, graphic artwork is stocked in Liberty, Heal’s, Le Bon Marché, Amara and Anthropologie. Sunny is also a textiles lecturer at Hereford College of Arts. Create your own one-off stencil and screenprint it onto a canvas bag for you to take away (Fairtrade and UK-produced).

Creative writing sessions with activities to help your stories grow. Come and explore your creativity with Emma, she has a wealth of experience running creative writing workshops and an infectious approach to building a story. Emma is currently writing a novel based on her sailing adventures in Svalbard and her educational writing includes Making Poetry Happen (Bloomsbury, 2015).

Tracy Chevalier in conversation with Claire Armitstead

New Boy

Venue: Good Energy Stage

Told over the course of one school day in 1970s Washington DC, New Boy is Tracy Chevalier’s take on Othello. It is a powerful modern drama about fitting in, standing out and knowing which friends to trust, from one of our most successful novelists. Tracy will be in conversation with Claire Armitstead.

Join the Qubit Zone team for a 90-minute workshop where you will learn about the incredible world of quantum computers. The University of Oxford team will introduce you to mysterious quantum phenomena – including qubits, superposition and entanglement – and then let you loose with your own quantum circuitry to try it out for yourself. Jim Eliot and Mima Stilwell: All day YA Songwriting Workshop

Venue: Scribblers Hut

Jim Eliot and Mima Stilwell have written and produced records with some of today’s biggest pop stars, including Ellie Goulding , Kylie Minogue and Will Young. They started out by writing music in a band and touring festivals and venues in the UK then a lucky break took them into the pop writing world. Since then they have honed  their pop-writing craft to produce No 1 chart singles, hits and soundtracks. Come and work with them to combine classic songwriting with cutting-edge production skills giving you insight into the art of writing commercial hits. Bring a packed lunch.
