The writer reads from his latest book La marca del meridiano and discusses it with Ana Gavin, inviting members and representatives of reading clubs to an open dialogue. After the initial reading by the author there will be readings by Pedro Arahuetes, Clara Luquero, Aurelio Martín, Teresa Sanz, Luis García Méndez, Jesús García Calero, Pedro Zuazua, Carlos Aganzo, César Gómez, Alfredo MatesanzLucía HerranzBlanca García and Elena García Gil.

The Dutch writer, journalist and blogger, author of The Joris Luyendijk Banking Blog in The Guardian, discusses the challenges facing journalists in this fast changing world with Deputy Editor of El País, Vicente Jiménez. The President of IE University, Santiago Iñiguez, introduces the event.

Design in full bloom

– Venue: Plaza Mayor / Acueducto

The moving work of art, created by the Dutch designers Niels van Eijk and Miriam van der Lubbe, is a unique but ephemeral combination of Dutch design and floral art. Starting in the Plaza Mayor at 7.30pm, this colourful creation meanders down through Juan Bravo and Cervantes streets, reaching the spectacular Aqueduct at 8pm to conclude at sunset, around 9pm.

Wayra: Gonzalo Martin-Villa

– Venue: Sala Refectorio, Campus de Santa Cruz La Real-IE University

Wayra, which in Quechua language means “wind”, was instituted by Fundación Telefónica in 2011 as a start-up accelerator programme which promotes projects with a strong base in telecommunications providing technology, orientation and finance. Presented by Gonzalo Martín-Villa, who talks with three entrepreneurs at strat-ups related to the context of the Hay Festival.

Val McDermid in conversation with Tiffany Murray

– Venue: Caja Segovia

Val McDermid is one of the best selling crime writers in the English-speaking world. Her prolific literary work, which has been translated into more than 30 languages, includes titles such as The Wire in the Blood, The Distant Echo and her latest work The Retribution. She has been awarded the prestigious Cartier Diamond Daggerprize for her contribution to the genre throughout her career. She speaks with the writer Tiffany Murray.

Fflur Dafydd

Creative writing workshop

– Venue: IE-University Sala 144

The award winning Welsh author, songwriter and “Hay Festival International Fellow”, Fflur Dafydd, offers a hands-on creative writing workshop which explores various ways to conceive characters, situations and scenes.  Whether in English or in her native language, Dafydd has published six works of fiction, and all of them have received prestigious awards.

Screening: Di Renjie zhi tongtian diguo ('Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame')

Directed by Hark Tsoui (2010, 123 minutes, in Chinese with Spanish subtitles)

To mark the accession to the throne of Wu Zetian, soon to be the first empress of China, a huge Buddha statue is built in the capital. Meanwhile, when some dignitaries suffer from spontaneous human combustion, Wu seeks help from Dee Rinjie, an officer she sent to prison some time ago, to resolve the mystery.

We enter the factory of great stories. What defines literary success nowadays? Can it be foreseen? Is it possible to “make a best-seller”? In a society overwhelmed with information, there are writers who have deserved a lot of attention:  Julia Navarro, Javier Sierra, Lorenzo Silva and Juan Gómez-Jurado speak with Jesús García Calero and Inés Martín Rodrigo about the fabulous secrets that make this profession unique.

Artist, writer, acute analyst, astonishing instigator, aware of what surrounds him, original, unclassifiable, Eduardo Arroyo is internationally recognised as one of the greatest exponents of Spanish culture. He speaks with Jesús Ruiz Mantilla about art, politics and history. As a voluntary exile Arroyo has been a witness to the civil uprising in Paris in May 68 and to the diatribes of the eternal Italy which he experienced in the seventies until his return to the establishment rocking ¨movida¨ in Spain. He is still a witness to the current Spain, with all of its wounds. They will read their texts.

The inauguration of Agustín Ibarrola’s exhibition will be followed by a conversation about post-war Basque sculpture, focusing on Chillida, Oteiza and Ibarrola. Elvira González, one of the most distinguished Spanish art gallery directors, Carlos Martínez Gorriarán, author of the biography Jorge Oteiza, hacedor de vacíos, join Ibarrola in the dialogue.
