The Internet: This is for Everyone? Really?

Writer Jamie Bartlett and academic Damian Tambini tried to predict what the future may have in store as the world becomes ever more reliant on tech, big data and artificial intelligence.

Bartlett said, “We are going lto have to regulate technology to save it.” He believes unless there is more transparency, and openness there could be a backlash from the public which in turn could lead to more authoritarian measures being introduced to curb the freedoms tech giants currently enjoy.

Tambini said he thought we were on the cusp  of change and there was a consensus that the old rules used to regulate the media and the way political elections and campaigns are run  are no longer fit for purpose.

Predicting how the future could unfold Bartlett said current inequalities in society could be magnified as more and more people would find themselves out of work as computers and tech became more dominant.

Tambini was equally concerned  and said that as we continue to innovate we will need to ensure transparency and that new principles and regulation keep pace with change to protect both civil society, and the individual.
