Every Tree Counts

Frosty and cold – perfect weather for the series of walks in and around Hay over the Winter Weekend with the Woodland Trust (WT) and tree expert Derek Wright. To mark Tree Charter Day, we are today planting oak trees across the 800-acre estate of Dinefwr, on the outskirts of Llandeilo. This is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and was the first parkland National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Wales.

The trees have been donated by the Woodland Trust, to grow alongside the estate's mighty specimens dating back 400 years. The Big Climate Fightback is a WT campaign sparked by the the Government's failure yet again to fulfil its annual tree planting commitments,  and is linked to Hay Festival’s Thirty Acre Wood project. Launched in 2017, Hay's 30th anniversary, the Festival pledged to create digital and real-life woodlands across the UK. Every person planting a tree can upload the GPS co-ordinates and a photograph of their tree to create a virtual woodland mapped across the UK. This featured as part of WT’s plans for celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest in 2017.The tree planting today takes place at Dinefwr from 11.30am-1.30pm.
