Sea of strangers, gathering of friends

Writer, poet and musician Gwyneth Glyn presented the live experience of her new album Tro at Hay Festival Winter Weekend on Saturday 24 November 2018 with band members Rowan Rheingans, Dylan Fowler and Gillian Stevens, and a warm Hay welcome was waiting.

"The late night slot at the Festival Tent? No one will be there," she said. "But it seems I was wrong! There in the twinkly twilight was a sea of faces, waiting, wanting… wanting to hear, wanting to feel. And it was warm. The warmest tent I have ever had the pleasure of being in, and the warmest, most attentive of audiences."

Glyn performed music from her new album, Tro. Welsh for ‘turn’, Tro Tro is a passionate journey that draws on Gwyneth’s rooted influences and recent experiences. It’s a collection of songs that trace a journey back to roots – from Cardiff, where she lived for five years, to her native environment in Eifionydd, north Wales.

“These are the most honest and intimate songs I have ever composed,” says Gwyneth. “They’re extremely personal and I never imagined, whilst writing them, that they would reach the public’s ears! But it’s thrilling to now be sharing them with the rest of the world.”

And the performance had a lasting effect on her and the audience. "We played. I sang. I sang the words that were only ever meant for one person, to a sea of strangers. And the sea of strangers became a gathering of friends."
