(Palo Alto, California, 1957) is a musician, composer, critic, historian, lecturer, pianist and jazz producer. He grew up in California, and was giving jazz classes at Stanford University even before graduating. His History of Jazz (1997) is considered to be essential reading for jazz aficionados. Winner of a Deems Taylor Award.
