Silvia VÁSQUEZ-LAVADO

(Lima, 1974) Activist who works against sexual violence, mountaineer, explorer, and businesswoman living in San Francisco. In 2014 she founded Courageous Girls, a non-profit organization that helps survivors of sexual abuse and human trafficking find their inner strength through mountaineering. She has worked for transnational companies such as Campari, eBay, PayPal and Xoom. In 2015 she was included on Fortune magazine's Heroes of the 500 list, and was named one of the twenty most influential Latin Americans in Silicon Valley by the technology website CNET.
The following year she became the first Peruvian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, and, in 2018, the first woman from the LGTBQ+ community to climb the seven highest summits on each continent. She has been recognized by the Peruvian Government as an ambassador of the Peru brand.
In 2022 she published the English version of her memoir In the Shadow of the Mountain, which has been translated into more than ten languages, including Dutch, German, French and Japanese. In 2023 her book was awarded an Edward Stanford Travel Writing Award. The book is due to be made into a film starring Selena Gomez by the producers Donna Gigliotti and Scott Budnick.
