Historian. Doctorate in Economic History from the University of Barcelona (Spain) and Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and Social Sciences of the Universidad del Norte (Barranquilla). In 2021 he was a Visiting Researcher in the Department of History at Harvard University and a Fulbright postdoctoral scholar. Colmenares is a member of the Memories of the Caribbean research group at the Universidad del Norte and is also the author and co-author of several articles and book chapters on the agricultural history of Colombia and the regional development of Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. In his book Cosechar para el mundo, pastar para la región: una historia de globalización en los Montes de María (1850-1914) (Banco de la República and Universidad Nacional de Colombia, 2023) he analyses the process of expansion of the mercantile economy in the Montes de María area of the Colombian Caribbean after its insertion into the European market with the export of tobacco. This work earned him an Honourable Mention from the Alejandro Ángel Escobar Foundation, and has received positive reviews in different academic journals.
