Lilia HERRERA

Lilia María Herrera Jiménez is a young Black woman of African descent from Tierra Bomba Island, a district of Cartagena. Lilia is a storyteller, reading facilitator, founder and director of the Alas Libres Community Library, administrative assistant, holds a degree in Ethnoeducation, and is currently pursuing a specialization in education, culture and politics at the National Open and Distance University. With expertise in pedagogy, cultural management and community-based social research, she has over ten years of verifiable experience in social research and intervention, ethnoeducation, community strengthening, citizen participation, addressing gender-based violence, cultural processes with an emphasis on literacy, and psychosocial support for children, minority, migrant, vulnerable and intersectional island populations, using a differential approach. As an empowered Black woman, she has served as a community liaison in the defence of the collective rights of the Tierra Bomba community and as an advisor to organizations in the development of academic, cultural and social projects. She is a pioneer of initiatives such as Cine con Alas, Alas Libres Voces que Transforman, A Patalea, and the Rompe’Cocos workshops, all coordinated through the Alas Libres Community Library. Her educational and cultural work strengthens Afro-Colombian identity and supports children, young adults and mothers in building life projects, creating safe spaces for development. Through these actions, she has contributed to reducing social problems in the region and promoting community transformation.
