Eduardo MATOS MOCTEZUMA

matos-moctezuma-eduardo He holds a degree in Archaeology from the National School of Anthropology and History and a Master's degree in Anthropological Sciences from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he also completed his doctorate. He has worked at the archaeological sites of Comalcalco, Teotihuacan, Cholula, Tula, Tlatelolco, and at the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan, where he founded the Templo Mayor Project. In 1991, he created the Urban Archaeology Programme. He has been a lecturer at the National School of Anthropology and History for more than 30 years and is currently an Emeritus Researcher at the INAH. His more than 500 publications include: Muerte a filo de obsidiana, Vida y muerte en el Templo Mayor, Teotihuacan, Los aztecasand Escultura monumental mexica, the latter with Leonardo López Luján. He has received the 2022 Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, the Palmas Académicas, the National Order of Merit, and was made a Knight of Letters and Arts, awarded by the French government, as well as the Andrés Bello Order, awarded by the government of Venezuela, and the Henry B. Nicholson Medal from Harvard University, an institution that also created the Eduardo Matos Moctezuma lecture series, the first time this was offered to a Mexican citizen in the 400-year history of the prestigious educational institution. He was awarded the 2007 National Prize for Sciences and Arts, received an Honorary Doctorate from UNAM and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Likewise, Matos Moctezuma is a member of the Seminar on Mexican Culture, the Mexican Academy of History, El Colegio Nacional and a full member of the Mexican Academy of the Language. He recently became an Honorary Academic Member of the National Academy of Architecture.
