Goretti KYOMUHENDO

Goretti Kyomuhendo is a leading Ugandan novelist and founding director of the African Writers Trust and TUBAZE African Books. She is the author of five novels: The First Daughter (1996); Secrets No More (1999), winner of the Uganda National Literary Award for Best Novel; Waiting (2007), Whispers from Vera (2023), first runner up for the 2024 Aidoo-Synder Book Prize for Creative Writing, and Promises (2025). Her work has been translated into Spanish, Amharic and forthcoming in French. She was the first Ugandan woman to receive an international writing program fellowship from the University of Iowa. She has chaired the judging panel for the Caine Prize, and in 2019, she was featured among the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African. Goretti is a founding member of FEMRITE, a women writers’ association and publishing house in Uganda, and served as its first director for ten years.
