Janet Martínez is a co-founder and Assistant Executive Manager of Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgo (CIELO). She is a Bene Xogsho (Zapotec) born in Los Angeles with a degree in Gender and Women's Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Martínez has addressed the problems facing indigenous migrant communities through her writing, having published articles on themes that include new insights into gender leadership in indigenous communities and the challenges that confront young people in indigenous migrant communities. She helped create the We Are Here map, the first map of the linguistic diversity of indigenous people in Los Angeles, and oversaw the development of the CIELO Zapotec Loteria. She also co-created and launched the We Are Here publicity campaign to bring more visibility to the indigenous migrant communities of the USA. Martínez created the Conference of Indigenous Literature and Weaving Words and Rhymes events. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Ozy, Vogue and on Telesur. She currently hosts the podcast Tu'un Dali, for indigenous peoples.
