Carlos Fernando CHAMORRO

Founder and Director of Confidencial, founded 29 years ago, a digital media outlet that combines investigative journalism and current affairs, and the television programme Esta Semana, censored since 2019, which is broadcast via YouTube and Facebook. Exiled since 2021 in Costa Rica, from where he runs Confidencial, whose newsroom was raided twice without a warrant by the Nicaraguan regime's police and illegally confiscated in 2021. In 2023, he was stripped of his Nicaraguan citizenship by the Ortega and Murillo regime. That same year, he acquired Spanish citizenship by naturalisation. He holds a degree in Economics from McGill University (1977) and was a Knight Fellow at Stanford University (1997-1998). He received the Ibero-American Freedom of Expression Award from Casa America Catalunya (2009) and the María Moors Cabot Award from the Columbia University School of Journalism Columbia University (2010); Ortega y Gasset Award from the newspaper El País, for professional achievement (2021); Golden Pen of Freedom (WAN- IFRA) (2024). Member of the Governing Council of the GABO Foundation for New Ibero-American Journalism.
