holds the Thomas E. Lifka Endowed Chair of History at UCLA. Her major publications include Migra! A History of the U.S. Border Patrol, City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965, Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and Revolution in the Borderlands, and the forthcoming Racist by Design: Two Centuries of U.S. Immigration Control. In 2016, she founded Million Dollar Hoods, mapping the costs of mass incarceration in Los Angeles. She is currently a principal investigator for Mapping Deportations and Archiving the Age of Mass Incarceration. A 2019 MacArthur Fellow, she is also a past president of the Western History Association, president-elect of the Society of American Historians, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Pulitzer Prize Board.
