Anglo-Turkish writer and professor. She is a defender of women’s rights, of the LGBT community and of Freedom of Expression. She has taught at several universities in Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom, such as St Anne’s College and Oxford University, where she is an honorary member. Her literary works are based on diverse cultures and literary traditions and try to unite the East and the West, reflecting her interest in history, philosophy, Sufism, women in society, minorities and immigrants. In 2010 she received the French distinction of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and she is a member of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom. Her latest novels are Three Daughters of Eve and 10 minutes and 38 seconds in this Strange World, the latter shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2019.
