Notable works include The Belly of the Whale (1997); Soldiers of Salamis (2001); Anatomy of a Moment (2009); The Impostor (2014); The Monarch of Shadows (2017); Terra Alta (2019); and God’s Madman at the End of the World (2025), many of which have won prestigious national and international awards. The Prix Ulysse in France; the International Prize of the Turin International Book Fair; the Friuladria Prize, the Premio Internazionale Città di Vigevano and the Premio Sicilia, all in Italy. Anatomy of a Moment won the National Fiction Prize in 2010, and Terra Alta received the 2019 Planeta Prize. Underlying Cercas’s work is the need for culture to emerge from the trenches and assert itself against the established powers.
