Martín Solares (Tampico, 1970) is a Mexican writer, lecturer and publisher. He is the author of Los minutos negros (2006), which has been translated into English (as The Black Minutes), French, German, Italian, Polish and Russian, adapted for the cinema and was a finalist for the Rómulo Gallegos Prize in 2007, the Bibliothèque des litteratures policières Prize in 2009 and the Antonin Artaud Prize in 2008, as well as winning the Best Mystery Novel award at the International Latino Awards in the USA in 2009. His second novel, No manden flores (PRHM, 2015), was a finalist for the Violet Noir Prize for the best foreign crime novel published in France, and has been translated into English (as Don't Send Flowers), French and Polish. Solares has recently published three novels that blend fantasy with the crime genre: Catorce colmillos (2018), Muerte en el jardín de la luna (2020) and Cómo vi a la mujer desnuda cuando entraba en el bosque, all of which are currently being translated into French. He is also the author of two children’s books: Los monstruos y tú (2010) and Bassim Bassán, el amigo de la muerte (2021), as well as two works of non-fiction: Cómo dibujar una novela (2014), translated into French and currently being translated into English; and El fantasma de las novelas y otros métodos instantáneos de análisis literario. He has won three national awards: the Efraín Huerta Short Story Prize (1998), the Juan de la Cabada Children’s Story Prize (2008) and the José Revueltas Essay Prize (2016). He has been awarded a grant from the SNCA on three occasions. In 2009, he defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle. Since 2016, he has been writing novels and screenplays, an activity he combines with his own literary workshops.
