Óscar Martínez (San Salvador, El Salvador, 1983). He is the editor-in-chief of the Salvadorian digital newspaper El Faro, author of The Beast: Riding the Rails and Dodging Narcos on the Migrant Trail (latest edition: Debolsillo, 2021); A History of Violence (Verso Books, 2016); and The Dead and the Journalist (Anagrama, 2021). He is the co-author of several books, among them The Hollywood Kid (Debate, 2018). He has won several awards: in 2016, he received the María Moors Cabot Award from Columbia University and the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. In 2019, he was invited to the Columbia Journalism School’s Global Visiting Fellows, and also Gallatin Global Fellow and visiting professor at New York University, where he taught the Coverage of Violence class.
