founded Cálamo, a bookshop known for its vibrant cultural activity, most notably the annual Cálamo Awards. He is a Favourite Son of the City of Zaragoza and a Distinguished Graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Zaragoza. Among other accolades, Cálamo has received the Cultural Bookshop Award, the Boixareu Ginesta Award, and Vanity Fair’s Open Bank Award for Best Bookshop in Spain. In 2011, the newspaper El País named it one of the eleven best bookstores in the world. In 2012, he was selected by the El Libro Foundation in Buenos Aires as one of the fifty most influential professionals in the Ibero-American publishing industry. He has conducted training workshops for booksellers in various countries and collaborated with book fairs in Frankfurt, Bogota, Guadalajara and Madrid. Together with Ana Cañellas, he directs the Hay Festival’s Publishing Talent project and the Otra Mirada gathering of independent Ibero-American bookshops and publishers. He also advised the University of Guadalajara (Mexico) on the design and launch of the Carlos Fuentes Bookshop.
