Mariela CALCAGNO

calcagno-mariela (Argentina, 1967) Director of Tinta Roja, a book distributor that specialises in small, independent publishing houses and in publications printed by academic and cultural presses. In 1998 she founded, together with Blanca Sánchez, Casa Juan Pablos, a space that was open for 10 years and included a specialist bookshop, a cultural centre and a publishing company that had already been running for twenty years: Juan Pablos Editor. The Casa Juan Pablos was a place that gave a platform to books printed by cultural and academic publishers from the Mexican regions, which had previously had little presence in the capital. In 2009 she founded Tinta Roja, a book distributor that, as well as representing Juan Pablos Editor exclusively, worked with other independent publishers and offered bibliographical services to libraries and documentation centres. She is also an active member of the Alianza de Editoriales Mexicanas Independientes (AEMI), forming part of its board of directors in the years 2008-2010. In 2010 she participated on the committee to promote and organise the First Independent Book Fair at the Fondo de Cultura Económica’s Librería Rosario Castellanos, an event that brought together 50 publishers from around the country for the first time. She represented AEMI at the Independent Publishers’ Forum organised in Buenos Aires in 2009 by the Alianza Internacional de Editores Independientes, and at the Otra Mirada meeting, organised by Librería Cálamo in Zaragoza in 2011. From Tinta Roja and the AEMI, she has focussed her work on raising the profile of books printed by independent publishers in Mexico, helping to make these visible in the complicated commercial world of bookselling.
