Saskia SASSEN

American sociologist, writer and professor of Dutch origin. She has won prizes such as the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, the CLACSO Prize, and she is a Lady of the Ordre national du Mérite in France. Her work and research focuses on phenomena such as immigration, cities, and the changes in liberal states resulting from current transnational conditions. One of her main scientific contributions, currently accepted and used around the world, has been the concept of “global cities”. Another fundamental aspect of Sassen’s work resides in her studies on power and inequality deriving from the processes of globalization. She is currently a professor of Sociology and a member of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University.
