Thomas PIKETTY

Thomas Piketty is a French economist who specialises in economic inequality and income distribution. Since the year 2000 he has been Director of Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He is currently Associate Chair at the Paris School of Economics. Capital in the Twenty-First Century has caused animated debate around the world, helping to reintroduce a concern for social inequality among academics, politicians, commentators and the general public. It has also offered proposals for fiscal policies of global scope, including wealth and inheritance taxes, to alleviate disparity. Its broad vision of the possibilities of the social sciences today is refreshing, as is the book’s solid, novel arguments, providing governments and societies with ways of confronting the scourge of inequality. For all these reasons, Piketty’s work is essential reading for our times.
