Carmen Aristegui Flores is one of the most recognized and outstanding journalists in Mexico. Since 2005, Carmen has been the presenter of the television programme Aristegui on CNN in Spain. Currently, she also directs and hosts Aristegui en Vivo, a morning news programme broadcast via the Aristegui Noticias channel, which has become a leading digital journalism platform in Mexico. She is the author of various books, including Uno de dos. 2006: México en la encrucijada; Transición: Conversaciones y retratos de lo que se hizo y se dejó de hacer por la democracia en Méxicoand Marcial Maciel. Historia de un criminal. Along the way, she has become known for her bravery in investigating and exposing cases of corruption and abuse of power. During the government of Felipe Calderón, her investigations into the handling of security and the war against drug trafficking created considerable controversy. Her work continued during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, always with a critical focus and in defence of the freedom of expression. She has received numerous awards and distinctions including the National Journalism Award in various categories (2001, 2004, 2009 and 2014), the Ondas Iberoamericano Award (2006), the Maria Moors Cabot Prize (2008), and the Order of the Legion of Honour in the rank of Knight awarded by the government of France (2013). In 2015 she was recognized with the Gabriel García Márquez Award for Journalism and with the Order of Merit in the rank of Knight from the German government. In 2017, Fortune magazine included her among 50 world leaders and that same year she won the Casa Amèrica Catalunya Award for Freedom of Expression in Iberoamerica. Subsequently, she was honoured with the Zenger Prize for Press Freedom (2018), the Diario Madrid Journalism Prize (2022) and the Inter American Press Association’s Grand Prize for Press Freedom (2023).
