(Chile) He has published the novels Santiago Cero (1988; CICLA Latin American Novel Prize), El lugar donde estuvo el Paraíso (1996; 2007 Punto de Lectura Chile award; shortlisted for the Planeta Argentina International Novel Prize; made into a film in 2001 by the Spanish director Gerardo Herrero), The Absent Sea (2011; 2016 Alfaguara Chile Prize; International Novel Prize awarded by the newspaper La Nación de Buenos Aires), Almuerzo de vampiros (2008, Alfaguara; Consejo Nacional del Libro y la Lectura de Chile award for the best novel published that year) and Si te vieras con mis ojos (2016; award for the best book of 2015 by the Círculo de Críticos de Arte de Chile, and the Mario Vargas Llosa Second Biennial Prize). He has also published the short story book La prisionera (2005, 2008 Alfaguara; Consejo Nacional del Libro y la Lectura de Chile award), the novella Alejandra Magna (2011) and the non-fiction book La muralla enterrada (2002; Santiago de Chile Municipal Non-fiction Prize). Some of his work has been translated into around ten languages. He has worked as a visiting lecturer at the universities of Cambridge and London and as Chilean cultural attaché in Spain. He is a member of the Chilean Academy of the Language.
