Illustrator in Residence 2023

Submissions are now open for the Hay Festival 2023 Illustrator in Residence position, offering an emerging artist the opportunity to take part in Hay Festival 2023 and contribute work to the Festival's materials. The residency facilitates and inspires visual storytelling in Wales and the wider UK, supporting artists in reaching a larger audience while emphasising the important role artists play in bringing words to life. The successful applicant will receive a fee of £2,500 for their work, plus an allowance for Festival expenses.

Who has held the residency before?

A trio of artists and illustrators have held the Hay Festival Illustrator in Residence position to date. You can see their work here.

What does the Illustrator in Residence do?

Between January and June 2023, the successful artist will:

  • Create an image or artwork for use as the Hay Festival 2023 programme cover.
  • Create the Hay Festival 2023 sitemap that appears inside the print programme.
  • ‍‍Attend Hay Festival 2023 for an agreed number of days and take part in programming, while creating work to be shared online during the Festival.

Am I eligible to apply?

The residency is open to all artists and illustrators with an emphasis on those in the development stage of their careers. Applicants must be resident in the UK.

Submissions will be accepted between 14 December 2022 and 20 January 2023, closing at 12.00 GMT. Please email your application to and include:
