New Model in Technology and Engineering

Engineers will design, create and sustain the UK’s economic future.   Engineering generates 27% of GDP, employs 5.5 million people and supports a further 14.5 million jobs.

But UK engineering is facing three Great Challenges –

  • We need more engineers – 10s of thousands of additional graduates are needed to sustain economic growth and replace retiring engineers
  • We need more diversity – only 9% of the UK engineering workforce is women (the lowest in Europe)
  • We need more employable graduates – 62% of graduates don’t have the right skills according to employers

The NMiTE university project is an unprecedented opportunity to inspire and teach a new generation of engineering talent and to transform the UK’s engineering higher education sector. It is funded by a unique public/private partnership with government, industry and international partners.

The new university, based in Hereford and opening in 2019, will educate more homegrown UK engineers with the skills employers want, has a 50:50 gender target which will kickstart expansion of diversity in the engineering talent pool, and will become the UK’s innovation lab for change in engineering education.
