Ida Vitale is a Uruguayan poet, translator, essayist, lecturer and critic, winner of many literary awards, including the Miguel de Cervantes Spanish-language Literature Prize (2018), the Federico García Lorca International Poetry Prize (2016), the Reina Sofía Ibero-American Poetry Prize (2015), the Alfonso Reyes Prize (2014) and the Octavio Paz Prize (2009). She played an important role in the Uruguayan artistic movement known as the Generación del 45. Under pressure from the dictatorship, in the 1970s she went into exile in Mexico. Vitale lived for many years in Austin (Texas) and now lives in Montevideo. The Lisbon writer and translator Ana Luísa Amaral is the author of works of poetry, drama, non-fiction and children’s fiction. In 2020, a book of essays on her work will come out in the United Kingdom (Poetry, Beauty and Resistance in Ana Luísa Amaral, Ed. Claire Williams).
