Philippe Sands (United Kingdom-France) is a writer and lawyer specializing in international law, and has worked in cases connected to Pinochet, the War in Yugoslavia, the Rwanda genocide, the invasion of Iraq and Guantanamo Bay. In his latest book, The Ratline: Love, Lies and Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive (2020), Sands follows the trail of Otto Freiherr von Wächter, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Poles and Jews. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, he spent years fleeing from international justice, hiding in the Austrian Alps and in Rome, intending to make his way to Argentina. Sands portrays a troubled time, and the everyday life of a Nazi fugitive, his private relationships with his wife and son, the involvement of the Vatican, and the transition to the Cold War.
