Event HF109

Haiti Kids Kino Project

 – Starlight Stage
There’s more to film than the latest blockbuster; cinema can unite communities and inspire hope. The Haiti Kids Kino Project is one such example of this in action and we think what they do is ace, so we’ve invited them to take over our Starlight Stage for the whole day.

Across the day families will be able to view films made by Haitian children, create ‘video postcards’ to send back and watch a selection of the most successful shorts screened as part of their transformative project.

The plan for the day

10am–11am: Video Postcards
From snappy salutations to squished stories, postcards can turn around the rainiest of days. Make your very own film-note to share with children in Haiti when HKKP return there this October!

11.30am–12.30pm: Zoetrope Wonders
Design your very own cartoon and see it coming to life on the big screen in this magical animation workshop.

1pm–2pm: Screenings
The Hedgehog in the Fog (Yuri Norstein / Russia / 1975 / 11 mins / Cert U)
This beautiful little film tells the story of a hedgehog who one evening goes to see his friend the bear cub to count the stars, but on his way a thick fog descends... Many people think this gem of a film is the best animated film of all time. Come and see for yourself.

The Red Balloon (Albert Lamorisse / France / 1956 / 34 mins / Cert U)
This little wonder of a film tells the story of young Pascal, a nine-year-old boy living an ordinary life in a sketchy, but gorgeous Parisian neighbourhood until the day that a large red balloon mysteriously floats into his life... and stays. Soon Pascal discovers that the little red orb seemingly has a mind of its own, but director Lamorisse has a delightful surprise in store for us.

2.30pm–3.30pm: Video Postcards
